What does it mean to be in the ICU?
i know what it literally means (intensive care unit) but what has to be wrong with a person to be in the icu? my friend is at the hospital in the icu and i just wasn't really sure what it meant. his injuries are really serious but he is alive and they know he will live, so why is he in there and whats the difference between that and just a normal hospital room?

If a patient in the icu, they care about him/her more. they check his vital signs( blood pressure, heart rate, temp. etc) more often. they keep watching him allover day and night. the monitors is always on him. they calculate and write down how mcuh he feeds and drinks and how much he urinate, and compare it with the normal. if they find any thing looks abnormal, they directly call the doctor at day time and the on call one at night time. they keep an eye on him, they write every thing on charts so they can follow his condition in detailed manner.

ICU= Intensive Care Unit and is mostly what has been described by Basel. It simply means that a persons health or injury needs constant monitoring and they will have a lot of monitoring equipment attached to them. It does not mean that they will no get well......
